This is an area of dramatic contrasts combining the rich farming patchwork of Fife with the high hills of Perthshire, the city bustle of Dundee and the deafening silence of the Angus Glens. The rich contrast means that it is easy to spend a day enjoying the fishing villages of the East Neuk of Fife, the Angus coastline with its rocky bays and red sandstone cliffs or the shops in Perth or Dundee. And yet the lochs and glens of Highland Perthshire are never far away. Angus and Dundee make a quite excellent, and very under-rated touring base. Heather covered hills and glens, castles, gardens, beaches and Dundee's visitor centre, Discovery Point, are matched by a wide range of accommodation, places to eat and shopping. Notable nearby tourist attractions include Blair Castle (home of the Duke of Atholl), Pitlochry (with its Festival Theatre in the summer months), Glamis Castle (ancestral home of the Queen Mother), Scone Palace (with impressive state rooms and historically the site of the coronation of the Kings of Scotland), and Perth (an elegant town with shops to match – and of course, Perth Races). In Dundee itself, ‘city tour’ potential simply abound Tourism is a key string to Dundee's bow and the city has a clutch of award-winning and dynamic visitor attractions celebrating its heritage and casting an eye toward its future. Discovery Point is arguably the centrepiece of the city's visitor scene sitting at the heart of the waterfront and housing the restored Royal Research Ship Discovery, on board which Captain Scott sailed on his first voyage to Antarctica in 1901. Its sister attraction Verdant Works is housed in a former jute mill and recounts Dundee's time as Juteopolis, the jute capital of the world. The Sensation science centre explores the five senses and houses more than 60 interactive exhibits including its most recent installation, a 3-D cinema. |
